Finance and Banking

As a result of developments in information technology and technology, the scope of banks and financial institutions is constantly expanding and their importance is increasing in the newly shaped business life and daily life. The aim of the Banking and Finance Department within the School of Applied Sciences is to train students in line with the rising demands of the sector and to create satisfying and reputable employment opportunities for them in the globalising business world.

The Banking and Finance Department offers theoretical education in subjects such as mathematics, statistics, law, computing, accounting, money, banking and credit, corporate finance, computerised financial analysis, investment project valuation, international finance and risk management, financial instruments and institutions, delivered by the existing academic staff (with the participation of academics from other universities when necessary). Market-oriented training is completed with the support of professionals in the sector. The inclusion of European Union politics and economics, monetary-banking-credit and accounting union standards in the course content provides students with the knowledge level required to meet the demands of the Turkish and European Union markets.

With the aim of training individuals who possess the qualities to meet the current and future needs of the business world, who are not only ‘knowledgeable’ but also ‘productive’ and able to apply their knowledge, English language training is provided alongside vocational courses. Thus, in addition to professional skills, students are trained to use English, the most widely accepted foreign language in the world, effectively. Our students, who use foreign languages effectively, acquire advanced knowledge in translating between relevant languages according to the demands of the business world in domestic and international markets, preparing market, company and bank evaluations and reports, analysing documents and reports, and conducting correspondence in the workplace.

In addition to the theoretical knowledge they acquire, students graduate with professional experience and skills that will provide them with many advantages in their working lives. In this regard, students are required to complete their 4th and 6th semester internships during the following summer months at public or private sector institutions (BDDK, SPK, TCMB, Borsa İstanbul A.Ş., VOB, Public and Private Banks, Securities Brokerage Firms, Factoring-Forfaiting and Leasing companies, Public and Private sector enterprises (Joint Stock Companies) Finance Departments) during the summer months following their 4th and 6th semesters. This will also help students overcome any difficulties in adapting to the work environment after graduation.

The conferences and seminars given by professionals, experts and bankers invited to our College will also greatly contribute to students gaining experience and increasing their knowledge and skills. Through conferences and seminars organised on these topics, students will have the opportunity to learn from experts how the knowledge they have acquired is applied in practice.

The public and academic rights of our students who complete their four-year education will be equivalent to those of faculty graduates. In addition, they will have the right to pursue postgraduate education in the programmes they have completed or similar programmes.

Department graduates will be able to work in the finance departments of the Ministry of Finance, the Undersecretariat of the Treasury, the Court of Accounts, the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, the Capital Markets Board, public and private banks, other public institutions, factoring, forfaiting and leasing companies, insurance companies, consulting firms, securities brokerage firms and private sector companies as finance coordinators, department heads, financial reporting specialists, budget and financial planning specialist, financial analyst, portfolio manager, audit committee member, or accounting specialist. They may also pursue independent careers as freelance accountants, financial advisors, or certified public accountants.

Students graduating from the department will be employed by banks and private financial institutions, insurance companies, securities brokerage firms, organisations operating in money and capital markets, auditing firms, consulting companies, leasing and factoring organisations. The fact that our universities mainly provide theory-based education means that these organisations have to retrain the personnel they employ in practical skills. This results in time and cost for these organisations, as well as a waste of national resources. The aim of this school is to minimise the cost of retraining educated personnel and to create a natural demand.
