Accounting and Financial Management
The need to convey reliable and accurate information about financial events occurring in businesses to interested parties and to fulfil the function of public disclosure has increased the importance attached to accounting. However, in our country, accounting education is provided at the faculty level in departments within the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences only on a theoretical basis and far from practice (especially in terms of laws and related legislation), while at the vocational school level, it is provided within two-year accounting programmes at a beginner level, focused on practice and far from theory. However, the sector needs personnel who are specialised in certain areas, capable of analytical thinking, and aware that accounting is a fundamental business function, rather than personnel who only have basic bookkeeping knowledge.
The aim of this programme is to equip students who wish to pursue a career in accounting with the necessary theoretical and practical foundations in the areas of consultancy, auditing and cost accounting, enabling them to enter the workforce without experiencing the current post-education adaptation problems and to meet the demands of the sector. Accounting students are required to complete a ‘SUMMER INTERNSHIP’ (at chartered accountancy firms, auditing firms, accounting departments of manufacturing, trading and service companies, etc.) during the summer following their 4th and 6th semesters. This will help students overcome any difficulties in adapting to the work environment after graduation.
Students who complete their four-year education will have public and academic rights equivalent to those of faculty graduates. In addition, they will have the right to pursue postgraduate education in the same or similar programmes.
Students graduating from the Accounting Department will have advantages in obtaining certain certificates that are important for working in international companies. For example, the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certificates.
Graduates of the department will be able to work in the accounting departments of all public and private sector organisations as accountants, financial advisors, cost accountants, or auditor candidates (which is the main objective). Furthermore, as they will have the right to take all public and private sector examinations that students of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences can take, their employment opportunities will be quite broad. The predominantly theoretical education provided at our universities necessitates that the aforementioned organisations subject their employees to further practical training. This situation results in time and cost implications for the organisations, while also leading to a waste of national resources. The aim of this school is to minimise the cost of retraining educated personnel and to create a natural demand. Students graduating from the programme will be able to work either independently or in the accounting departments of all sectors as accountants/financial advisors/cost accountants/auditor candidates without having to undergo further training or with only a minimum level of training.
